Classic Design Meets Modern Technology In The New Mercedes-Benz G-Class

Mercedes-Benz showcased the new G-Class SUV along with its classic design and modern features. The new model made an appearance during the 2018 Detroit Auto Show.

Mercedes-Benz surprises everyone with a nostalgic tribute to its beloved G-Class model. The latest version retains its vintage appearance but packs a modern touch. Automotive experts believe that the company did not want to change the look of its classic off-road SUV. Hence, it kept the rugged exterior design of the original with some minor touch ups here and there.

A quick glance at the new version of the capable vehicle makes it hard to believe that the original model launched close to four decades ago. However, a quick look at what is inside will most likely remind owners of its place in the present era of automotive technology.

Taking Center Stage

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class reportedly made its first appearance during the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. The manufacturer surprised attendees with the familiar and military-vibe and boxy good looks.

According to the automaker, its intention was to update everyone’s favorite original G550 with more power, reduced weight, top-grade comfort, and updated technology.

As a designer, it seems like a monumental task to be responsible for the redesign of a cherished model. Therefore, the team behind the updated Mercedes-Benz G-Class reportedly took great care to carry what customers deem iconic about the original. Nevertheless, changes had to be made to ensure that it will be able to compete with other models in its class.

“Each part and every bolt came under close scrutiny,” claimed Dr. Gunnar Güthenke, the manufacturer’s head of its off-road product group. “With the body, our main focus was on increasing the vehicle rigidity and the connections between the suspension and the drivetrain with the ladder-type frame,” he added.
